History of Kîstawâw Family Reunification
From humble beginnings, Kîstawâw Family Reunification is a resurrection of group living programs designed to meet the
needs of and support individuals with complex needs. It is our intention to become an established service provider
dedicated to all persons and communities in Lethbridge and surrounding areas. It was because of our experiences with
families and communities, that we envisioned a spectrum of services designed to empower and meet the unique needs of all
cultures and all individuals.
The FRP Healing Wheel takes families through a journey towards self-determination, breaking the oppressive systemic
cycles of addiction, child welfare involvement and broken families. The first quadrant focuses on stability and
adjustment (the horse before the cart). The FRP program observes, engages, and builds rapport with the family while
simultaneously identifying strengths, gaps, service needs and areas of concern. The second quadrant works towards
providing families with appropriate services and weaves (sweet grass) together a plan of action to close the gaps and
eliminate the areas of concern. The third quadrant moves the family towards semi-independence, in which the family
demonstrates their learned tools and begins to walk their journey (bear paw prints) with decreased FRP support. Finally,
in quadrant four, the family prepares to transition out of the FRP program and fly independent (eagle) while receiving
transitional weekly FRP support. The final success is a closed Children Services file.
In addition to having a strong presence in our Geographical community and throughout the human services arena, Kîstawâw
Family Reunification provides occasions for connection, growth and healing. Through our services, all diversities can
come together to experience inclusive and seamless programs and activities. Kîstawâw Family Reunification is a
cornerstone for programs and experiences which enhance the unity of our community, the dignity and wellness of our
people and promote family and community unity.
